What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically secured within the jawbone, just like the natural roots of your teeth once were. Due to their biocompatible nature, they’re able to fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration, creating a secure foundation for a dental crown, bridge, denture, or combination of the three to be attached to. So, they can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, so long as there’s enough jawbone for them to fuse with.

The Dental Implant Process

The first step of your dental implant process will be a consultation with one of our dentists at Spruce Ridge Dental. We will let you know whether you’re a good candidate or if you require preparatory treatments (like a bone graft or sinus lift) before you can move forward with the treatment. Next, you will undergo the surgical placement of your dental implants, which our professionals are able to perform in-house. You’ll undergo a healing process and wait for your implants to fuse with your jawbone (a process called osseointegration) for the following three to six months after your surgery. Then, finally, our team will attach your abutments to your implants and your restorations to complete your smile.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Natural teeth have two important parts: the crowns and the roots. Most traditional tooth replacement options like dentures and bridges only restore the visible part of the tooth, or the crown. On the other hand, dental implants are able to rebuild both the crown and the roots, offering better support and enhanced strength and aesthetics. They also offer a longer lifespan and are easier to care for, as they’re permanently secured within the mouth, so you only need to brush and floss like you would your natural teeth.
